Sweet Tooth trailer: Netflix’s post-apocalyptic DC Comics series is huge - Polygon
With shows like Shadow and Bone and Mark Millar’s upcoming Jupiter’s Legacy, Netflix is ramping up to its blockbuster era in order to compete with IP-heavy services like Disney Plus and HBO Max. This summer promises another unique, fully realized story: an adaptation of Jeff Lemire’s Vertigo/DC Comics book, Sweet Tooth.
A verdant saga given a Southern-baked twist from writer-director Jim Mickle (We Are What We Are, TV’s Hap and Leonard), Sweet Tooth follows a deer-boy named Gus (Christian Convery), the titular Sweet Tooth, as he traverses a world torn apart by a viral outbreak and what’s become known as the “Great Crumble.” To survive hunters who see his hybrid kind as the enemy, and scavengers finding their own way to survive, Gus teams up with a wayward wanderer (Game of Thrones’ Nonso Anozie) who has the advantage of being an enormous muscle man with a crossbow. It helps!
“We wanted to make a show that offers escape and adventure, where nature is reclaiming the world and in many ways it feels like a fairytale,” Mickle said in a statement. “Sweet Tooth is a new kind of dystopian story, it’s very lush and hopeful. We want people to come into this world where there’s beauty and hope and adventure. This is a sweeping story — we ride on trains, climb mountaintops, run through forests. This is a show about what makes a family, what home really means, and why it’s important to keep faith in humanity.”
Produced by Robert Downey, Jr. and Susan Downey, the show costars Adeel Akhtar (Murdered by My Father), Aliza Vellani (Upload), Stefania LaVie Owen (Krampus), Dania Ramirez (Once Upon a Time), Neil Sandilands (The Flash), with Will Forte (MacGruber) and the legendary James Brolin as the show’s narrator.
Sweet Tooth premieres on Netflix on June 4. Check out a few first-look images below.
