"Death on the Nile" Slays At Box-Office - Dark Horizons
Kenneth Branagh’s new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Death on the Nile” topped the weekend domestic box-office, the film on track to pull in $12.8 million.
That’s less than half the nearly $29 million opening weekend of Branagh’s “Murder on the Orient Express” adaptation a few years ago, though ‘Nile’ currently is scoring better reviews at 66% on Rotten Tomatoes while the B CinemaScore is on par.
The main issue is that the film cost $90 million to make and will need to rely on foreign box-office to make back its coin. Last week’s top earner “Jackass Forever” slipped to second place with $8.05 million – a steep fall of 65% suggesting it won’t have much legs.
Third place saw the new J-Lo and Owen Wilson rom-com “Marry Me” arriving with that set to take in $8 million for the three day. The film is also available now on Peacock.
The other newcomer, the Liam Neeson-led “Blacklight,” opened in fifth and is tracking for a bad $3.6 million start – on part with Neeson’s other action films of late like “The Marksman”. Reviews however have been excruciating, the movie scoring an almost unheard of low of just 6% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Moonfall” plummeted 71% in its second weekend to earn an estimated $2.85 million – that’s an even worse fall than the 57% dropoff of “Geostorm”. This has raised the question of how quickly the film will be moved to PVOD platforms.
